The Project for New Mexico Graduates of Color (PNMGC) recently honored UNM Psychology Professor Steven Verney for his dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion in New Mexico and the Albuquerque community. Verney was awarded the “All-Around Support Award” at the annual Faculty of Color Awards (FoCA) ceremony held at the University Club on April 18, 2024.

Expressing his gratitude for the recognition, Verney stated, “I am honored and humbled to be nominated by graduate students. Rewards in Academia are few and far between, so I am thrilled to receive this award! I would like to thank our graduate students of color and allies who have worked so hard to make a difference. It has been an honor and rewarding to work with such a strong group of students during my tenure here.”

Verney also extended his appreciation to his family and indigenous Tsimshian relatives, acknowledging their role in shaping his principles of equity and justice. He highlighted the importance of community engagement in his work, particularly with underrepresented minority groups, stating, “Research can identify strength-based and community-engaged approaches to identify inequities and work towards culturally-appropriate, sustainable, and ethical interventions."

As a Multiple Principal Investigator of the Transdisciplinary Research, Equity and Engagement (TREE) Center for Advancing Behavioral Health, Verney focuses on reducing behavioral health inequities and promoting underrepresented minority leadership. He emphasized the significance of culture-based research approaches and inclusive teaching methods at UNM, aiming to address the unique challenges faced by students of color.

Verney's commitment to promoting equality extends to his colleagues at UNM, whom he praised for their dedication to advancing research for the well-being of diverse communities. He emphasized the importance of recognizing efforts towards equity and well-being, stating, “I am one of many who are deserving of PNMGC awards including faculty, staff, and students who are passionate and dedicated towards reducing inequities and increasing health and well-being in our communities.”

In acknowledging the historical traumas and disparities faced by New Mexico communities, Verney highlighted the need for culturally appropriate and community-engaged research to address health inequities and honor the richness of the state's diverse cultures.

The PNMGC, a student program at UNM, aims to support historically underrepresented students by fostering academic, cultural, and leadership development. Founded by UNM graduate students of color, the organization continues to promote inclusivity and community building within the university.

Steven Verney's recognition serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in academia and beyond.
